Chic Christmas Tree

There are billions of ways to decorate a Christmas tree; it completely depends on the size, decorations, and theme. Growing up, we would always do a very traditional tree with novelty ornaments. Flipping through magazines, such as Southern Living, I was always curious how people would completely overload them with ribbons and picks. I'm going to share some easy DIY ways to decorate a chic Christmas tree, that will be the talk of your holiday party.

It's super easy to have a beautiful elegant Christmas tree this year. First things first, pick out a color scheme. I chose silver and pale blue and then as I was decorating added in some white and aqua. Idea was for it to look like a snow tree. Here are a few Christmas tree color scheme ideas:

  • Light green, bright red & gold.
  • Gold, sliver & bronze.
  • Aqua & silver
  • Blush & gold
  • Turquoise & bronze.
  • Traditional red & green

Pick one or two colors and a neutral, for a good place to start. Then go shopping! Ornaments, ribbon, picks, tree topper and skirt.

You will need to pick out approx. twenty ornaments for every foot of the tree.
3ft tree = 60 ornaments.
10ft tree = 200 ornaments.
You want it to look super full with just the ornaments. And you want them to be different sizes, shapes, textures, and finishes (matte vs. sparkle) to give the tree some life and depth.

The ribbon and picks can either be coordinating or contrasting colors with the ornaments - for instance mine were both. I had silver ornaments and picks, but the blue picks were darker than the blue ornaments on the tree. And the ribbon was white iridescent, but matched the white topper and skirt I got.

Here's a breakdown of what my 3ft. tree has on it: 70 ornaments, white iridescent ribbon, 8 picks (4 blue berry, 2 silver berry & 2 silver ribbon), & a matching white snowflake topper and skirt.

When decorating you should start with the ornaments, then the ribbon and then picks. Make sure you scatter the ornaments all over the tree and yes, big ornaments can go all the way at the top!

There are many ways to decorate with the ribbon. You can cut small strips off and tuck and puff (like my tree) or you can actually wrap the tree, just make sure you actually tuck half inside the tree or you can have it streaming down from the top (this is a great way to use multiple colors).

Finally, the picks! It's easiest to just pop them in the remaining empty spots on alternating sides.
