Grace Not Perfection

Have you gotten sucked into the idea of everything has to be Pinterest worthy in order to appear like a great person? Or that your daily struggles are on repeat? Trying to achieve it all? Then this book is for you!

Emily Ley, the author and founder/designer for the Simplified Planner, has created a wonderful hot pink book full of ideas how to embrace simplicity and to celebrate the joy in life.

As a college student, entrepreneur, dreamer, etc. I want to do it all. Have good grades, successful business, travel, money to move out, lots of wonderful friends, volunteer at church... but it is so easy to try to obtain it all and try to do it all at once, instead of working on achieving one or two great goals.

Without tackling the other things, just being a full-time students has its struggles, keeping up with assignments, good grades, sleep, showers, eating proper meals, social-life, etc. then add in working, wanting more.

// Women, showers are nonnegotiable, and leggings are not pants. Makeup is optional, but sister, feed yourself breakfast (and not out of a mug)! You're doing no one any favors by putting yourself last. //

This quote hit home, right in the heart. It was the type that just screamed one's name. That was me, skipping a shower and throw on leggings and a t-shirt, while putting my hair up in a ponytail and dashing on a little mascara, skipping breakfast and running off to school. There were so so many days where I would skip breakfast and lunch and not get a full dinner, because of school and babysitting (you would be surprised at the lack of concern people have for babysitter regarding dinner).

Last fall was a wake up call to me regarding choosing - you cannot do it all. I had to quit volunteering at church and had to let my MK business slide, so that I could concentrate on an urgent family matter and passing my classes.

Life really does give you little warning when a tidal wave is approaching; one minute I was living it up in Italy and Greece and the next I was worrying about registration for school, then we got the news that Dad had an extremely rare and aggressive cancer. In that moment what is better option? Do not wait until you absolutely have to choose one thing over another, because there is not another option; slow down and enjoy life.

Everyone has seasons in life that are harder then others.  But regardless of where you are in life, taking the time to slow down and enjoy the little moments are precious. Being Pinterest worthy is not all that it has cracked up to be. One cannot be perfect, so why chase perfection?

// I will hold myself to a standard of grace, not perfection. - Emily Ley //

Suzanne Marie
