Austin is an absolutely weird and awesome place; it would be very cool to live there, everyone should be able to find an 'area' where they fit in and hang out. Mine would totally be South Congress, very touristy, yes, but very hipster too. I could see myself going there to shop and study.
Totally needing coffee and we had seen on South Congress St. the night before that there was a Toms Roasting Co shop, we decided to stop by and have a look. Such a cute little place, love love loved it!! The focus was obviously on their coffee line, however they had a little room with a small selection of their shoes, bags and glasses. And they have two adorable outdoor areas to go and chat, study, etc. I could totally see myself on S. Congress all the time, if I lived in Austin.
Well we were kind of playing each day by ear, because of weather and South by South West was going on; although we had no idea that it was happening until we were trying to find parking and people were charging $30 for a parking spot.
So after grabbing our coffee, we went to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. This was actually something we hadn't even thought about going to until, Eva found a pamphlet about it at our hotel and ta-da, a very cool expedition. The Wildflower Center, was absolutely beautiful, it was a little cool, but I'm really glad we went. They have a really great area just for kids, and then they have several big fields full of wildflowers, mainly bluebonnets and indian paintbrushes. Oh and did you know that there are purple bluebonnets?? They are so pretty!
Finally, getting back into downtown Austin, Eva really really wanted to go to Voodoo Donuts. And luckily it wasn't too far from the Church we were planning on attending for the Palm Sunday Vigil. They are known for their crazy weird donuts, for instance one had maple frosting with bacon pieces on top, or there were some with different kinds of cereal on them.
Then we went St. Mary's Cathedral for confession and Mass. I realized just how much I love the gothic architecture style for churches, hahaha that's part of the reason I love St. Patrick's in Fort Worth.
Afterwards, we headed toward the S. Congress bridge to watch the bats. We got a little lucky with that, because of the nice weather we have been having and the mild winter here in Texas. The bats migrate farther south for the winter, so because it has been pretty warm they came back in March, normally it's around April. We had no idea if they were going to be there or not, it was a hit or miss situation. Peak season is in July, if you want to see the full colony, which is over 1 million. Anyway it was super cute, because you could hear their little squeaking before they even started coming out and then when they did, some of them would fly out and back in, as if wasn't dark enough yet.
Finally, we stopped to get some sushi for Eva, at a cute little Japanese restaurant (I'm not a huge fan, but had promised we would get some at least once on our trip.).
XOXO,
Suzanne Marie
